Unrestrained Pets Are a Distraction While Driving

Think twice before you take an unrestrained pet in your vehicle. Pets pose a major distraction, too. Traveling with an unrestrained pet is a danger to you, others on the road, and the pets themselves.

Chicago Tribune says, “In addition to texting or talking on a cell phone while driving, lap dogs and other pets left unrestrained inside moving vehicles pose a major distraction that could be deadly, a new study released Wednesday warns motorists.

About two-thirds of dog owners surveyed by the AAA organization said they routinely drive while petting or playing with their dogs, sometimes even giving them food or water while maneuvering through traffic.”

Just as a motorist cannot text, change the radio, etc. while driving and not be distracted, they cannot care and tend to an animal that is running loose in the car. Even in the best case scenario with a pet who never moves, think what would happen to that pet in an accident. Pet crates and restraints are just responsible pet ownership and driving.

Please drive safely. It could mean the difference between life and death. A car is a lethal weapon. Treat it as such. Don’t tailgate, text, talk on the phone, or get distracted while driving. Pull over and do whatever you need to do, but don’t do it while you drive. And slow down. The world will not stop if you are late, but it will if you are dead.

Please do not watch this around young children. It is very graphic.

Did you ever notice that when you were on the phone that even your young children knew you were not paying attention? Your perfect little angel turned into a tiny terror getting into everything the moment you started talking on the phone. When you are talking with someone in the same room they tend to know that while you are talking with someone that you are still present and paying attention and will save the things they really want to get into until you are on the phone.

What Will It Take for People to Get the Message?

1 of 2 18-24 year olds admit to sending texts while driving. This is one of the most dangerous categories on the road already due to their lack of experience, but they are the worst for texting on the road.

This was one of the most moving videos on distracted driving. Seeing their daughter’s car after the accident and knowing how senseless it was should move every state to take action. I am not, however, for federal laws regulating what should be done by states. States need to step up to the plate on this issue.

It is senseless tragedy after tragedy. These people did not think they would never live to walk off of that train because someone was being careless. Someone thought they could handle it. Do you want the one time you can’t handle it to cause someone to lose their life? Is the risk worth it? No one has this right. If we can require people by law to buckle up which only saves their own life, then surely we can pass AND enforce laws to stop people from doing things that endanger the lives of others.
